The Experience

As a volunteer in our project, we need help 1-2 hours a day doing light housekeeping and helping with reception. The wages earned cover your cost of accommodation and the rest of the day is yours to explore! Visit nearby Pancake Rocks and harvest some mussels for dinner. Tramp along the Great Paparoa Walk, kayak the Porarari River, and gaze at glow worms among friends. Make the beautiful west coast of New Zealand your home for a few weeks!

I had the best time here, Chris is very hospitable and the I met some amazing people. There's not heaps to do around the area and so the company was what made my experience worthwhile, i can imagine that in summer this place is beyond beautiful and a great place to work, chores are quick and easy and the accommodation felt like home :)

As a first-time solo traveler diving into the Worldpackers experience, I was a bundle of nerves. However, any apprehension I had dissolved once I was welcomed by Chris and the team. It was a very safe and welcoming environment. The tasks/volunteer work was easy and never took more than an hour and a half. It was a perfect balance between contributing to the lodge and having ample time to explore the breathtaking surroundings. Especially when Chris has some local gems to show us!! Punakaiki is literally paradise—the scenery is surreal!! Many outdoorsy things to do and see.

It creates internal conflict: on the one hand, you probably want to see the rest of NZ, but on the other, that involves leaving. I am still here as of writing this and don't know when I'll go.

The days in Punakaiki were amazing! The landscape is stunning and the people I stayed with were super fun and lovely. Also Chris was such a good host! He was very generous, funny and cared a lot about us. He planned some fun activities and you had always a good chat with him. The work was also done quickly and you had a lot of time to exploreeee🐛🌱

The „the lodge“ is a beautiful place. You can calm down, enjoy nature and meet volunteers from all around the world. The work is not hard, it will never take more than 2 hours per day. Food is not included, bring some groceries - but don't worry you have the opportunity to join a 'cityday' to Greymouth and stock up :-) Chris, one of the hosts is a kind and generous person. He is helpful and makes everyone welcome and included in the community. I'm glad i had the opportunity to visit punakaiki and met some great people! ..... Pancake rocks are stunning by the way✨ (:
