The experience

Our project is located in a remote part of South Africa on the Elephant Coast , bordering the Isimangaliso Wetlands Park, an UNESCO World Heritage site for biodiversity and natural beauty. Our camp is next to Lake Sibaya, South Africa's biggest fresh water lake, filled with hippo and crocodile.
At the moment we are updating the species list, this is a continuous project with the aim to compile detailed species list .Training is provided.


What you offer

15 hours of help per week

Painting & Decorating: Help with painting or decorating the property facilities.

Building & Repairing: Help with a wide range of repairs or building.

Gardening: Help grow plants and cultivate gardens

Animal Care: Help look after and take care of animals.

Additional fee required

Amount: US$ 45 Per week

Fee pays for: Benefits for travelers and Materials for volunteer activities

Program Details

In the last 10 years , Hippo numbers on Lake Sibaya has dropped from 472 to just 7 ! We are trying our best to save the last hippos living in Lake Sibaya.
Our project is in a remote wilderness, with miles of tropical beaches, forest and lake systems, mostly unexplored , wild and spectacularly beautiful. Little is know about the creatures that life in these forest and we are currently photographing, identifying and describing all the life forms we find in the area, So far we have identified over 270 bird species, countless insects and trees and currently we are focusing on butterflies, wildflowers and mushrooms.
We also take part in regular beach and lake clean-ups, social and educational project and offer study support.


Activities & Shift

Our camp has a relaxed feel to it, Volunteers are encouraged to work on their own projects at their own pace. We spend a lot of time hiking in the forest , safari in the park or lazy days on the beach.
We spend our days exploring this unique wilderness area and photograph, identify and catalog as many species as possible. This is for an ongoing ecosystem survey.
As we are close to one of Africa's most idyllic and remote beaches, we do spend a lot of our free time on the beach, hiking in the forest or chilling at the camp. Our camp is also part of a popular backpackers and there are always a good flow of travelers visiting us.
