The Experience

Are you hardworking, tough and strong and not afraid to get dirty? Can you think like an animal? Prior experience with animals is an advantage. You must be comfortable working with strong animals, who can sometimes be anxious or stressed, and take your tasks very seriously. Responsibilities include feeding, training and caring for the animals, cleaning stalls, moving hay and more. Animal care can be tough and a bit “blood and gore” sometimes.

Take all reviews serious, ask volunteers! Nice farm! Agreed on cleaning rooms, helping with shearing , help preparingthe lodge, no cooking, looking for HIS kids (~9+6, not 1+4!). Host said, could be long days from time to time e.g. shearing. All days with guests were from 8am until 9pm (the lodge, Farm tour x2, alpaca walk x2, cleaning rooms, arrival of new guests, help preparing dinner, all the time bartending+cleaning dishes), about 30min break. On free days help shearing, mowing the lawn. Rude, aggressive and very unorganized host. Left earlier, NOT RECOMMENDED! Thanks Worldpackers for help!

The alpaca farm itself and its surroundings are a nice place but I would not recommend anybody to go here. Paul was very unorganised and completely disregarded the working hours. If you think about volunteering here, you should definitely discuss your tasks in detail, otherwise there can be misunderstandings where Paul gets extremely aggressive and disrespectful. In addition, the accomodation was dirty and uncomfortable. During my stay here all the volunteers, including myself, left earlier than planned.

Active farm with animals, tours, B&B guests and both hired and volunteer workers. WP hours not truly supported, accommodations minimal and there is a general lack of organization and respect. Owner did accommodate my limitations for work detail, i.e.minimal lifting and did attempt at times to be considerate. Time w/workers and volunteers appreciated.

Paul can be friendly and fun to hang out with, and order pizza or Chinese food, for instance. On the other hand, Paul can also be rude, angry and disrespectful, which I didn't like at all. I have experienced this, and so have other volunteers (who, just like me, left earlier). In addition, Paul is somewhat chaotic, is unaware of and/or disregards your working hours and days off. Moreover, Paul expects you to clean up after yourself, but does not practice what he preaches, as there are lots of cigarette packages on the property. Paul does not set a good example. Would not recommend going here.

Me and Iza had 8h/10h shifts and we had only one day off which we spent on cleaning the dirty cabin where we had to live. He was expecting us to be on call 24/7. His violent behaviour full of shouting and swearing led to a point when we were afraid to ask anything because he threw out the volunteers that were complaining. After 14 days of work , he kicked us out and he didn't care if we had a place to go, but only about a negative review here. Apparently we didn't meet his excessive expectations which never matched what we agreed upon arrival. If you want to know the whole story, just text us!

Paul replied

Jose,

It deeply saddened me to see that you had used so much energy to write such a damning and biased review.

We both know what really happened !

Of the 100's of volunteers that have help us over the years we have asked three to leave us. This has only happened when it hasn't been safe for my family, staff, guests the animals or the property.

As you are well aware you endangered the lives of both our guests and the animals on the farm and even after several polite requests we're unable to respect us or the years off hard work we have put into the farm. Your lack of respect was truly frustrating for my family, my staff and the other volunteers on the farm.

We enjoyed having Iza on the farm and it felt unfair to ask you both to leave but when it comes to the well being of the animals and the health and safety of the guests then this will alway be our priority.

Do say a warm hello to Iza if she still traveling with you !

Anyone reading Joses review I urge to please contact some of the other Volunteers that we have had on the farm for a realistic view of us our family and business.

Lucia was here with us and has also spent time with Jose and will be able to describe the actual situation !

Jose even though you took the time to write these untrue things we wish you all the best and safe travels.

//Paul, Marta, Dylan, Oscar and all the animals.
